Research and Analytics

About Us

At the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) the Research and Analytics team is dedicated to empowering state regulators with cutting-edge data, technology, and analytical products in support of its mission to help regulators anticipate and mitigate risks within a financial services industry rapidly evolving in volume and complexity.

CSBS’ Research and Analytics team is comprised of Bank Analytics, Nonbank Analytics, and Economic Research functions. To support state regulators on their data analytics adoption journeys, the team will periodically organize state-specific examiner trainings, platform demos, and seminars on an as-requested basis and as capacity permits. The R&A products and services act as a force multiplier, equipping states with analytical, reporting, and data thought leadership support. From creating risk-prioritized exam schedules to consolidating key metrics in user-friendly dashboards, the team enables states to build a modern, data-driven regulatory system.

Key offerings include:

Governance

The Research and Analytics team focuses its work on the needs of its regulator members and uses engagement channels to ensure those needs are being heard and fit within larger strategic objectives set by the CSBS Board of Directors.

The Data Analytics Taskforce (DAT) was chartered by the CSBS Board of Directors (the Board) to provide regulator perspective on prioritization and decision-making regarding data analytics. The DAT is comprised of a Chair, Vice Chair, representatives from each of the five CSBS districts, and two at-large members - all of whom are appointed by the Board. Additionally, the Chairs of both the Regulatory Committee and State Supervisory Processes Committee are ex-officio members of the DAT to represent the interests of their respective committees as it relates to data analytics.

Partnerships

The Research and Analytics team strives to find new opportunities for collaboration with the academic and research community. The team supports CSBS’ Data Analytics Competition, the Community Bank Case Study Competition, and the Community Bank Research Conference.

Through a partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, economists, policymakers, researchers, and other public stakeholders can now access the CSBS Community Bank Sentiment Index (CBSI) on the Federal Reserve Economic Database (FRED) platform. FRED is widely used across the economic data user community and will help build awareness and access to CBSI data. The Research and Analytics team plays an important role in both processing the CBSI data each quarter and helping transmit a structured version of that data to the FRED team.
